Aarberg–Frienisberg Terrace–Lyss Hike

A short hike across the elevated terrace on the northern slope of Frienisberg. Enjoy a refreshing mix of shaded woodland paths and open stretches, with beautiful views of the farming villages in the Frienisberg area and the Jura range. Note: some longer sections outside settlements are on firm surfaces.

Route: Aarberg – Lobsigen – Aspi – Eigenacher – Lyss

Highlights: Pass the historic sugar factory (founded 1899), then conquer the only significant climb up to the high plateau (70 m gain) with panoramic views of the Aarberg power station reservoir and the forested Frienisberg ridge. Continue through Lobsigen (past the Lobsigen nature reserve and its post-Ice Age lake), then follow the Seebach stream to Aspi on the Aarberg–Bern road.

Final Stretches: Traverse the hamlets of Rotholz and Vogelsang, descend through forest to Eigenacher, cross the highway, and pass through Rikartsholz. From the soldier’s monument you’ll enjoy sweeping views over Lyss and Seeland. Finally, pass the historic old and Reformed churches before returning to Lyss station.

Along the Old Aare Floodplain

Lyss – Aarberg – Kappelen – Lyss – Studen

Once a mighty, unpredictable river, the Old Aare now flows gently through protected alluvial forests. This varied trail invites exploration of streamside wilderness, wildlife habitats, and historical towns.

  • Aarberg: Begin at the station, pass the town center, then enter the nature reserve along the Old Aare.
  • Floodplain Trails: Both banks offer waymarked paths; we follow the eastern shore, passing a former sugar-factory settling pond before entering dense woodland. Keep an eye out for beaver lodges, diverse flora, and abundant birdlife.
  • Kappelen Bridge: Here road noise intrudes; cross to Lyss on a scenic riverside footpath.
  • Busswil Detour: Briefly traverse farmland, then rejoin the riverside path to Studen.
  • Seeteufel Zoo: Home to over 45 species—turn left after the zoo to return to Studen via Grien stop.

Predominantly natural terrain, with initial and final paved sections.
